Hong Kong dog rescue

6 12 2009

Last weekend we went on the annual Hong Kong dog rescue Peak to Fong walk. The walk starts on the top of Hong Kong peak and runs down the hill, ending in Lan Kwai Fong. We arrived early as we needed to buy a ticket for Morne. All proceeds go towards the Hong Kong dog rescue shelter who were just told that they are losing their premises with kennels. So they have to move elsewhere. Its a major problem as there aren’t many places for them to go. They are also based right next to the government kennels. The government will keep a stray/ lost dog for 4 days only before euthanizing them. So HKDR will go and rescue as many as possible.

There were so many people on top of the peak and many more dogs!! Mostly big dogs and loads of toy poms. They like their toy poms and poodles. Calypso was wearing two coats – one I knitted and her warm jacket. She has so little fur and shivers all the time. Of course, everyone wanted to take pictures of her! And were constantly pointing at her. She was also very well behaved with the other dogs there. There were some beautiful dogs too. Volunteers brought some of the dogs from HKDR out for the day. All those available for adoption wore pink bandanas and volunteers wore t-shirts saying – this dog needs a forever home. So cute!! Most of them are gorgeous with lovely natures. I really do hope that they can find homes for most of them.

The actually walk was started and we were off. Its downhill all the way with spectacular views of the city. Calypso practically ran down the hill. Other dogs were carried, some pushed in prams and there were even two dogs on one leash walking each other! Midway, we were met with water bowls for the dogs and free Vitamin Water for owners. After a short stop, we were off again. Calypso walked all the way for a full 1 hour 30 minutes and we arrived in Lan Kwai Fong in one piece. Again, met by photographers taking pictures of all the walkers and dogs who made it down. We only saw one other miniature pinscher on the day. A little black dog called Fun Fun. She is 7 years old and half Calypso’s size. And also shaking like a leaf! Poor thing didn’t have a coat. Her owner was very infatuated by Calypso because she is brown and just wanted to hold her all the time. Even in the photo, she is staring at Calypso!!! Not her own dog! HAHAH!

There were also many stalls selling everything you could think of for dogs – food, clothes, toys. You name it. Calypso even had a professional photo taken. We will receive it this week. So watch this space.

All in all, it was a lovely day for a very worthy cause. And Calypso had a looooong day!
